One ofMoreWhile many excellent tools such as IBM Rational BuildForge, BMC BladeLogic, provide excellent systems for automating build, configuration, and application deployment, the truth is that the vast majority of such work has yet to be automated.

One of the challenges Ive seen to adoption of such tools is that these tools do not address the organizational transformation required to achieve the benefits of such automation. For example, a build server works great in the development environment, yet what happens when the application needs to be deployed to QA, Model, Production? Most likely a different group in the organization is responsible for deploying to this environment.

Moreover, decisions made in the development environment may not align with the need for a streamlined process in subsequent stages of the application lifecycle. The other challenge is the cost of acquiring and configuring an end-to-end automated configuration and deployment system, and the service costs and inherent risk of rejection for such a solution. To solve this problem, this work illustrate a process that has worked for medium size and large organizations.

More importantly, the process is automated through simple, easily understood components such as xml, xslt, ssh, and jython, ant. It works in your development environment, it integrates with automated systems, and it can easily be extended to target any application server, whether its in the Cloud, or operating in stealth mode beneath your desk. Better yet, this process leverages an inversion of control and command pattern to enable multiple projects to simply and easily adopt this system.

I like to think of the challenges and solutions described in this work as the last mile description of how to design a simple, repeatable, proven process for deploying web application from development to QA,, to Model, to Performance, to Production environments.
